The Last Thing

by tcr · April 3, 2025

I am speaking, here, for myself only. Admittedly, I am old and somewhat set in my ways. Not because I think I am a righteous person but because I have seen more death than most and dealt the same in combat. It sticks with you like bad food in a cheap restaurant. At first you feel sick, then the pain in the gut and lastly, the revelation that you are not the only one. Bless you, if you have never taken a life.

As the title states, I am one who, the last thing I would think, is to consider myself above the fray or feel, in any manner whatsoever, that I am righteous. I am neither meek nor humble but for the fact that I, we, stand naked before God and that all we do is noted whether we know it or not. I choose to know that I have to account for myself in every way and that accounting scares me to death, keeps me on the straight and narrow, and, best of all, keeps me honest.

When I began this just about one week ago, give or take a few hours, I did so for one thing. To tell people that even the worst lives lived can seek redemption. All is never lost, until death, and a belief in the invisible inhabitants of this universe is not that much of a stretch. There is more unseen than seen when you stop, walk away from your belief in this world and the way it works, and consider, not karma or eastern philosophy, but your life from your birth to today.

How many have you hurt? How many have you put down? Are you willing to face those and apologize? A real man, should you like the definition, is one who does not display his strength by hurting others. I speak not from my standpoint but from the Bible. I trust the Bible and it has never let me down. Not once. In fact, it has allowed me to be what God wanted me to be with but a few exceptions that I will not go into here. I am imperfect, aware of imperfection and, therefore, not afraid to apologize for my transgressions.

Does this make me superior. Goodness sakes, NO. It makes me God fearing and that is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow even though I am not certain that I will see eternity with conscious eyes.

Take your life seriously and do not harm others unnecessarily. Take a shot, read the Bible starting with Genesis. Read just a few paragraphs and consider what you’ve read. At least it is a start in understanding the majesty of human life from the perspective of purposeful creation. It will humble you and make you grateful if your heart is right, loving. If not, well, there’s always this “wonderful” world of sinful and rotten behavior. Help yourself.
